So easy and delicious, caramelized Brown Sugar Rum Baked Ham, with crispy brown edges and sticky glaze, will be the centerpiece of your Sunday or holiday dinner table. Great for parties and potlucks too!
Ingredients
Meat
- • 10 lb Ham, smoked bone-in fully-cooked
Condiments
- • 3 tbsp Dijon mustard
Baking & Spices
- • 1 cup Brown sugar, dark
Beer, Wine & Liquor
- • 1/3 cup Rum, dark
Direction:
- Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F. Get your pan and rack ready (or make one if needed).
- Prepare the Glaze: Mix the brown sugar, rum, and mustard in a small bowl and set it aside. Give it a quick stir before using, as letting the sugar dissolve a bit in the rum enhances the flavor.
- Prepare the Ham: Remove any wrapping from the ham. Some hams come with a thin, plastic-like layer that’s easy to miss unless you check the ends, so be sure to peel this off completely.
- Score the Ham: Use a sharp knife to make 1-inch deep cuts in a diamond pattern across the surface of the ham. This allows the glaze to penetrate deeper, giving the ham more flavor.
- Bake the Ham: Place the ham on the rack in your pan and pour a cup of water into the bottom. Cover the pan tightly with foil to create a steam tent, which keeps the ham moist. Bake on the center rack for 2 to 2-1/2 hours, checking with a meat thermometer to ensure it reaches 140°F.
- Apply the Glaze: Remove the foil and brush the glaze mixture over the ham, making sure to cover all the scored cuts. Bake, uncovered, for 15 minutes. Then, reapply the glaze and bake for another 15 minutes. The glaze should be caramelized, and the ham will start to brown.
- Rest and Serve: Allow the ham to cool for a few minutes, then transfer it to a serving platter. For a festive presentation, surround the ham with fresh greens and fruit. Enjoy!
