Chicken Patties Wrapped in Perilla

Chicken patties wrapped in perilla leaves are a savory, aromatic dish that blends tender ground chicken with the fresh, slightly minty flavor of perilla leaves. Perilla, a herb commonly used in Asian cuisines, adds a unique taste and fragrance that enhances the chicken patties. This dish is a perfect appetizer, snack, or main course when you’re craving something flavorful and fresh. It’s simple to make and packs a punch with the combination of herbs, spices, and juicy chicken.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground chicken
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon chopped green onions
  • Salt to taste
  • Perilla leaves (about 10-12 large leaves)
  • Olive oil or vegetable oil for frying

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix the ground chicken with the egg, breadcrumbs, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, black pepper, green onions, and a pinch of salt.
  2. Shape the chicken mixture into small patties, about the size of your palm.
  3. Carefully place each patty in the center of a perilla leaf, folding the edges around the patty to fully wrap it.
  4. Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, gently place the wrapped patties in the pan.
  5. Cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until the chicken is cooked through and the perilla leaves are crispy and golden brown.
  6. Remove from the pan and let them drain on paper towels.
  7. Serve hot with a side of dipping sauce, or enjoy on their own!
